The colonists of New England believed that they were being treated unfairly. The people had no representation in Parliament which created the statement, "No taxation without representation". The American colonists believed that they were under an unjust government and that they should create their own government. The Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, Used ideas from Enlightenment thinkers such as Locke, Rousseau, and Montesquieu. The American Colonists tried to solve the problem peacefully but in the end had to revolt resulting in the United States of America.
